Level 5? Category 5?

What's the difference?

Level (n) applies to the physical wire only.

Category (n) applies to the cabling and termination infrastructure including Modular Inserts/Plugs, 110 Patch Panels, 66 Block and Data Patch Panels and so on.

The (5) in Cat 5 refers to the Level # of the wire: (Level 5)

Here's a table of transmission throughput supported by each Wiring Level:


Telecom Wiring Levels:
Level 119.2 Kbps - Phone, RS232.
Level 24 Mbps - Token Ring
Level 3 10 Mbps - Ethernet (10Base-T)
16 Mbps - Token Ring
Level 416 Mbps - Token Ring.
Future: 25 Mbps - Token Ring (ATM).
Level 5 100 Mbps - Fast Ethernet
Supported distance: 328 feet overall.
