TheBSGTT Faces from the Past TheBSGTT

Before getting into the differences between Analog and Digital Technology - let's take a moment to check out the folks responsible for getting us from there to here.

You may not know it, but some common telecom terms possess a face:

Isaac Newton Principles of Mathematics
Michael Faraday Electro-magnetism
Georg Ohm Principle of electrical resistance - Ohm's Law.
Andre Ampere Process to measure electrical current - the Amp.

Allessandro Volta Properties of electrical energy - the Volt.
Heinrich Hertz Sine wave cycle(1 cycle per sec = 1 Hertz)
Samuel Morse Morse Code & Telegraph
Elisha Gray Western Union - Telegraph & Telegram

Alexander Graham Bell The Telephone - the Man!
Thomas Edison Direct Electrical Current - DC
George Westinghouse Alternating Electrical Current - AC
Guglielmo Marconi Radio Transmission

Madam Curie Properties of the Quartz Crystal
Emile Baudot The Baudot Code as in Baud Rate
Agner Erlang Telecom Traffic Analysis
Alan Turing Micro-Processor - Code Breaker.

Most of the folks above had multi-faceted lives. I just picked out their particular endeavors that, I believe, advanced telecommunications technology.

An interesting aside: I'm sure you are keeping an eye out as to what is going on between Microsoft, Netscape and the Federal Government.

The fracas over the Browser Wars is miniscule in comparison with the competitive drive and ingenuity employed over who was going to win the electrical distribution war between Westinghouse and Edison.

Alternating Current and George Westinghouse won that one. When you next visit your local Library - check out the history of the Electric Chair. If you think that corporate America practices hard-ball competition today - it is absolutely nothing compared to what went on between Westinghouse and Edison.
Okay - so we know some of the players in the Analog and Digital Telco world. Let's move on to the Binary Numbering System.
