Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts Announcement

Very few people exuberated the passion and the joy for reading, writing, and for the library as Katie McCreedy. In the early mornings before school, she could often be found settling on one of the library’s couches with a book to read. Katie’s zeal for literature did not end there but extended to her own hand. An excellent writer herself, Katie had many poems published in the school literary magazine, "What". Furthermore, she worked as a journalist for the school newspaper, "Inkblots". In each publication she wrote with a flair and mastery shown by the most elite writers.

Katie treasured the library. So much in fact, she worked as a library assistant her junior and senior year. Her contribution and hard work are still evident today. Many books are still where she shelved them. Every time a student walks into the library and finds a book successfully, it is due to her effort and dedication.

To honor Katie’s memory and her love for literature, writing, and the library, the McCreedy family asks that you make any donations to Katie’s high school, Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts. All the money collected will go to the purchase of books for the library. Each title purchased will have a nameplate in the book honoring the memory of Katie McCreedy.

If you are interested in donating to Katie’s memory, please make all checks payable to CCA. In the memo of each check, please write for The Katie McCreedy Fund. You may drop off your donation at the main office of Center for Creative Arts or mail to the address below.

Tribute - The Chattanooga State Communicator - October 2004

On September 7, 2004, 18-year-old Katherine Alice “Katie” McCreedy died in a car wreck in the rain. The candles pulled from her 18-year-old birthday cake sat in a saucer on the table.

She loved college, despite her initial protests. She received a generous donation to be able to attend college for two years in Utah after she got degree in Information Systems at Chattanooga State, just like she wanted. She was working, driving and having fun with friends, like every girl her age should.

Katie came to Chattanooga from Utah with her family while she was in middle school. She was a member of the youth group at Rivermont Presbyterian Church and the Stuart Heights swim team. Both Katie and her younger sister, Mary, attended the Center for Creative Arts and were active in several areas. Katie was interested in the theatre arts and was on the school softball team for a while.

Those who knew Katie knew there was nothing she could not do, or at least try. She was an amazing actress, devoted friend, caring sister and one of the l oudest cheerleaders around. She will be sorely missed.

Katie’s surviving family includes parents, John and Barbara Ashurst McCreedy, her younger sister Mary, all of whom lives in Chattanooga. Her grandmother, Margaret Ashurst, in Salt Lake City, Utah; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of family and friends from Northern Ireland, England, United Kingdom and of course, here in the United States.

Rest in Peace, Katie.

We love you.

Katie's Song
With fiery passion, spirit bright,
Revealing paths we could not see,
You filled our darkened hearts with light
And led us forward fearlessly.

Your brilliant candle's wick is cut,
Our path through life once more obscured,
But, though your earth-bound eyes are shut,
Your soul's true vision has endured.

And as we make our skyward climb,
While unclear roads our steps dismay,
In Heaven shines a beam sublime
Named Katherine, who lights our way.
